Build a body and lifestyle you’re proud of

Build a Healthier Routine That Works in Real Life

Looking after your health is not simply about training harder, eating perfectly or following a strict routine.

Work, family responsibilities, shift patterns, social commitments and everyday life can all affect how consistently you exercise, eat, sleep and recover.

Health & Wellness Coaching with The Missing Piece helps you build a realistic approach around the life you actually live.

Whether you want to become more active, improve your fitness, build better food habits, improve your sleep or create a more consistent routine, the focus is on practical changes you can maintain.

You do not need to be an experienced athlete or already have strong discipline to begin. We start from where you are and build from there.

Why Work With Me?

I’m Alistair Johnstone, founder of The Missing Piece and a National Bodybuilding Champion.

My own experience in training and physical development has taught me the importance of discipline, consistency and adapting your approach when circumstances change. I bring that practical experience into coaching, while recognising that your goals, starting point and lifestyle are different from mine.

I’ve helped 500+ people through one-to-one work over eight years, supporting people through real-life changes and helping them turn intentions into practical action.

I’m also an author and speaker, and my approach is practical, direct and focused on helping you make changes that can work in everyday life.

A Practical Approach to Health and Wellness

Health and wellness involve more than exercise alone.

Movement, fitness, food habits, sleep and recovery can all affect how you feel and function day to day.

Your coaching is built around understanding your current routine, identifying what you want to improve and creating practical actions that fit your circumstances.

Depending on your goals, this may include:

  • Reviewing your current activity and movement
  • Building a realistic training or exercise routine
  • Looking at everyday food habits
  • Considering sleep and recovery
  • Finding ways to stay active around work and family commitments
  • Creating routines that are realistic for your schedule
  • Reviewing progress and adjusting your approach

The aim is not to create a perfect plan on paper.

It is to create a plan you can actually use.

You Don't Have to Be a Bodybuilder

Health and wellness coaching is not only for people who already train regularly.

You may be returning to exercise after a long break, trying to improve your fitness, looking to become stronger or simply wanting to take better care of yourself.

My background in bodybuilding gives me first-hand experience of training, discipline, consistency and physical development. However, your coaching will not be based on somebody else’s routine.

Your starting point, goals, schedule and current lifestyle all matter.

The approach is adapted to where you are now and what you want to achieve.

Making Healthier Habits Fit Real Life

A routine can look excellent on paper and still fail when real life gets in the way.

You might work shifts, have children or family responsibilities, travel regularly or have an unpredictable schedule.

Instead of treating these things as excuses, coaching looks at how your routine can work around them.

Together, we can identify:

  • When movement realistically fits into your week
  • Which habits are easiest to change first
  • Where your current routine creates difficulties
  • What could make consistency easier
  • How to adapt your plan when your circumstances change

The goal is sustainable progress rather than a short period of motivation followed by giving up.

Movement, Fitness and Training

Your fitness goal might be to become more active, improve strength, increase fitness, return to training or create a consistent exercise routine.

Your approach will depend on your current level and what you want to achieve.

I can help you look at what is realistic for your current circumstances and build an approach that you can maintain and develop over time.

You do not need to train at a competitive level.

The focus is on finding a realistic approach to movement and fitness that you can maintain and build on.

Food Habits Without Extreme Rules

Food is part of everyday life, so any approach needs to work around your actual circumstances.

Working hours, family life, social plans and routine can all influence how you eat.

Coaching can help you review your existing habits and identify practical changes that support your goals without relying on unrealistic rules.

The focus is on building habits that are sustainable and fit your lifestyle.

Health & Wellness Coaching does not replace specialist nutritional or medical advice. If you require specific dietary advice for a medical condition or specialist nutritional need, you should consult an appropriately qualified healthcare or nutrition professional.

Sleep and Recovery

Training and activity are only part of a healthy routine.

Sleep and recovery also matter, particularly when you have long working hours, shift patterns, family responsibilities or a busy schedule.

Coaching can help you look at your current routine and identify practical ways to give recovery greater consideration.

The aim is to create a healthier balance between activity, rest and the demands of everyday life.

What You Actually Receive From Coaching

Health & Wellness Coaching is not simply a conversation about what you should be doing.

You leave sessions with a clearer understanding of what you are working towards and practical actions to take away.

Depending on your goals, the process may include:

  1. Assess Your Starting Point – We look at your current activity, routines, lifestyle and the areas you want to improve.
  1. Define Your Priorities – We identify what matters most rather than trying to change everything at once.
  1. Create Practical Actions – We agree realistic actions around movement, fitness, food habits, sleep or recovery.
  1. Review What Happened – At the next session, we look at what you managed to do, what got in the way and what you learned.
  1. Adjust the Approach – Your plan can be adapted as your schedule, circumstances and goals change.

This gives you a structured process rather than a generic fitness checklist.

Measuring Progress

Progress does not always mean a number on the scales.

Depending on your goals, meaningful progress could include:

  • Exercising more consistently
  • Becoming stronger or fitter
  • Increasing your everyday activity
  • Improving your routine
  • Developing more sustainable food habits
  • Improving your approach to sleep and recovery
  • Feeling more confident and consistent with your health goals

Progress is considered against your own starting point and the goals we agree to work towards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Life coaching is a forward-focused, action-oriented partnership. It helps you identify your goals, overcome obstacles, and create sustainable change in your life. You bring the drive — I bring the structure, accountability, and real-world experience to help you get where you want to be.

Coaching is collaborative — you’re the expert on your life, and I’m here to ask the right questions, offer perspective, and help you unlock your own solutions. Expect honest conversations, practical strategies, and someone who holds you accountable to the goals you set.

The first session is about getting to know each other and understanding where you are right now. We’ll discuss what brought you here, what you’re hoping to achieve, and whether coaching is the right fit for you. There’s no pressure — it’s a conversation. If we both feel it’s a good match, we’ll outline a coaching plan tailored to your goals.

Absolutely not. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from coaching. Whether you’re recovering from a difficult breakup, rebuilding after addiction, working through relationship challenges, or simply wanting to level up your life — coaching can help. The best time to start is when you recognise something needs to change and you’re ready to do the work.

This varies depending on your goals and commitment level. Some people notice shifts in perspective within the first few sessions. Others see tangible changes — better relationships, improved fitness, career progress — within 4-8 weeks of consistent work. The key is showing up, being honest, and taking action between sessions. Coaching works fastest when you’re actively engaged.

Yes, all coaching sessions are available online via video call, making it accessible whether you’re in Scotland or anywhere in the world. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person ones — you get the same level of attention, insight, and accountability. We can schedule sessions at times that work for you.
